Beach bonfires are NOT allowed in the towns of Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, and Kill Devil Hills.

Fires are permited WITH A PERMIT on the beach in Nags Head and the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

The Town of Duck neither owns nor maintains any public beach access locations. The Town of Duck does not allow parking along state roads, and there are no public parking areas at beach accesses. Please check with the homeowners’ association for your vacation rental or with your rental company for beach access questions.

The Town of Southern Shores neither owns nor maintains any public beach access locations. The Town of Southern Shores does not allow parking along state roads, and there are no public parking areas at beach accesses. Please check with your homeowners’ association or the civic association for beach access questions.

  • Duck- Pets may play unleashed, but must be under the watchful eye of a guardian.
  • Southern Shores- Dogs are only allowed on the beach between the hours of 6:00 p.m-9:00 a.m. from May 15th to September 15th.
  • Kitty Hawk- From the Friday before Memorial Day until the day after Labor Day between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. dogs must be on a leash not exceeding 6 feet.
  • Kill Devil Hills- Between Memorial Day and Labor Day of each year no dogs shall be permitted on the public beach between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. unless being used to aid a handicapped person.
  • Nags Head- Dogs are allowed on the beach at all times as long as they are leashed.
  • Cape Hatteras National Seashore- Your pet must be on a 6’ leash at all times and are prohibited within any resource closure.

Fireworks and Chinese Lanterns are illegal on all Dare County beaches.

  • Please stay on all marked trails.
  • Keep pets (WHEN THEY ARE PERMITTED) on a leash.
  • Remove all trash and leave nature as you found it.
  • Do not remove or damage ANYTHING.
  • Obey all signs and closures.

  • You must have a permit to drive on the beach in Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, and The Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
  • Beach driving in Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head is not year round, see either website listed below for updated season information.
  • There is no beach driving at anytime in Duck, Southern Shores, and Kitty Hawk.
  • Obey all signs and closures and keep vehicles away from the sand dunes.
  • Please obey all beach traffic laws and rules.
